Strengthening Haitian-Led Disaster Response and Preparedness

June 9-11, 2022

Venue

La Cretonne Hotel, Les Cayes, Haiti
Rte de l'aéroport, Bourjolly 1, aprés l'usine de Simon, Cayes Haiti

The response to the 2021 devastating earthquake in the south of Haiti shows the myriad challenges Haiti faces in preparing for and responding to disasters despite lessons learned after the 2010 earthquake and 2016’s Hurricane Matthew in this same region. Haiti’s high risk of natural hazards combined with high vulnerability of its population make it crucial to improve the response to this disaster and improve capacity for preparedness and response for the future.

Over 200 local leaders and government officials from communities throughout the affected area joined this conference to:

  • examine the earthquake response in the Grand Sud,

  • analyze how the national and local disaster response systems can be improved, and

  • identify steps to improve preparedness, capacity, and coordination among local and international actors.

This conference was organized by Haiti Response Coalition and Haiti Development Institute with the support of our co-hosts and the generous support of our sponsor, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.
